Timeline and Circumstances: Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old student-athlete (wide receiver) at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled to Horn Island by boat with a group of friends on July 4, 2026. He was last seen at approximately 3:00 p.m. on the island.
Search and Discovery: A massive, multi-agency search was initiated involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the United Cajun Navy. On the morning of July 6, 2026, a park ranger discovered a body in the water near the west end of Horn Island. Local authorities stated the remains matched the description of Wells. His family has since publicly confirmed on social media that the body found is Nolan.
Investigation: The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Coroner’s Office are handling the investigation. While the family and authorities await formal DNA identification and further findings, officials have indicated there is no reason to believe the remains belong to anyone else.
